I'm once again back at it.

Welcome back to another series of blog posts! This covers BUS265 Advertising Design, discussing what makes ads powerful and effective or not. The class focuses on examining ads and campaigns run by different companies and seeing how they approach it! From that information, you can learn different practices used in promotions.

Let's start with the basics by looking at a strong, effective promotion - here's one of the ads featured as an example in the book:

This is a good example of how ad campaigns don't need to be complex to be appealing – it's usually better if they aren't. A strong, short headline with clear messaging and imagery usually does the job.

(Take a look at the Volkswagen Beetle ads directed by Helmut Krone! They follow a similar design philosophy and inspired many future ads to take a more simple, sleek approach.)

That's the general overview of a simple, fundamental ad you can look at as a point of inspiration. What else is there to consider in the process?

  • Are you trying to sell a product or inspire your audience to do something?

  • Are you speaking to a global audience? Does your ad handle sensitive topics that could backfire if handled poorly?

  • Is your ad truthful about the product or service?

  • Is your ad creative? Is your ad purposeful? What is your ad's tone and end goal?

The other aspect is learning creative ideation tactics - specifically how to generate lots of ideas quickly! The faster you can generate ideas, regardless of quality, the more options you have to look through for later consideration and the more likely you are to have a quality one.

There are lots of tools and strategies for ideation. Some of the ones I use are free association, writing EVERYTHING down, and making word associations. You may want to carry around a small notebook to write down things that inspire you!

This is just a general overview of what I've picked up so far. I don't have the word count left to go in-depth, but later I'm going to cover how I apply these lessons to one of my own projects: “BOSS: Daybreak”! (or just "Daybreak" for short.)

Stay tuned for that!
